Believe

Winner 2008 -> Russia : Dima Bilan - Believe

But .. let's believe this could have been the Top 3 ;-)

Victory for Dima Bilan - Russia

Dima Bilan won the contest for Russia with 272 points. He's the first winning male solo singer since 1990. His second trial at Eurovision, after having ended at 2nd place right behind Lordi in 2006, seems thus to have been a great success.

Don't know if Moscow is a good holiday destination for May 2009 with 6°C today and 16°C tomorrow.

Belgium really ended very low in the 1st semi-finals -> 17th place (of 19) with only 16 points (10 points received from The Netherlands and 6 from Estonia).

The Netherlands did it a bit better and ended at 13th place in the 1st semi-finals. Switzerland ended at 13th place in the 2nd semi-finals (with 47 points).

Here are the final results of the finals. As expected Russia, Ukraine and Greece share the top 3. It's good to see Norway also made it to the top 5 and Israël to the top 10.

A bit different from our votes :

Saturday, May 24, 2008

Congratulations to Russia!

Congratulations to Russia, a nice winner!

While watching the show I thought the performance of France was so bad that I gave his 8 points to Ukraine. Obviously I should have made other changes but c'est la vie ;-)

My votes while watching the show leaves me with 6 of my choices in the top 10 and only a fluke having Ukraine in the top 3.

12-Israel x
10-Albania
8--Ukraine x
7--Norway x
6--Sweden
5--Romania
4--Denmark x
3--Serbia x
2--Armenia x
1--Iceland

Friday, May 23, 2008

Good Luck Everyone!

These are my picks for the finals before the show.

12-Israel
10-Albania
8--France
7--Norway
6--Sweden
5--Romania
4--Denmark
3--Serbia
2--Armenia
1--Iceland

What to expect from the finals ?

Now that we have a good number of the songs we liked in the finals, it will probably be a good show.

Seen the order they will perform, I think the start will be not that good and a lot of songs are at the end of the contest.

I think Greece, Russia, Ukraine and Serbia will end in the Top 5, but here is my personal Top 10 for the finals before the show of tomorrow :

- 12 for Norway
- 10 for Iceland
- 8 for Albania
- 7 for Serbia
- 6 for Israël
- 5 for Sweden
- 4 for Turkey
- 3 for Finland
- 2 for Portugal
- 1 for Ukraine

Our votes for the 2nd semi-finals

Different choices, but several ones in our Top 10 made it to the finals.

Thursday, May 22, 2008

We was robbed!

I can't believe that Switzerland didn't make the finals :'(

Oh well here were my votes.

12 -Switzerland
10 -Albania
8 -Sweden
7 -Cyprus
6 -Ukraine
5 -Iceland
4 -Turkey
3 -Denmark
2 -Belarus
1 - FYR Macedonia

At least there will be 6 of my 10 choices in the finals.

My Votes for the 1st semi-final

Israel...........12
Romania......10
Andorra.......8
Norway........7
Armenia......6
Belgium.......5
Bosnia & H..4
Russia..........3
Slovenia.......2
Finland.........1

7 of my 10 choices go on to the finals

2nd semi-finals

Tomorrow the 2nd semi-finals. More good songs than in the 1st semi-finals.

We can't vote (since Belgium doesn't participate in this one), so I'm curious to see the results.

Results 1st semi finals

OK, no Belgium in the finals ...

Here are the our results given yesterday (we allowed Laurent could vote for Belgium since he is French ;-).

Glad to have Norway & Israël going to the Finals. A bit surprised that Poland, Greece and Bosnia & Herzegovina go through instead of Slovenia or The Netherlands.

Azebaijan probably made it with the great show (since singing during the song was really not great) ... it was a great entrance and start of their performance.

Second semi-finals on May 22

5 good songs in these semi-finals :

1) Albania
2) Turkey
3) Switzerland
4) Iceland
5) Sweden
6) Belarus
7) Hungary
8) Denmark
9) Ukraine
10) Croatia
11) Cyprus
12) Portugal
13) Bulgaria
14) Georgia
15) Malta
16) Lithuania
17) Czech Republic
18) Macedonia
19) Latvia

First semi-finals on May 20

Not easy to make a ranking for the 1st semi-finals. Rather a weak selection of songs. That could maybe be a positive point for Belgium ?

Based on the clips (so for some probably better quality than live performance - ex. Azerbaijan) here is my ranking for May 20 :

1) Norway
2) Slovenia
3) San Marino
4) Moldova
5) Finland
6) Netherlands
7) Russia
8) Azerbaijan
9) Israel
10) Belgium
11) Armenia
12) Montenegro
13) Romania
14) Andorra
15) Poland
16) Bosnia
17) Greece
18) Ireland
19) Estonia

SWEDEN

EUROVISION 2008
Sweden - Charlotte Perelli - Hero

She sings ok and the music has a strong beat
but I don't think it is much of a song,
there is nothing really outstanding about it.

Michel. said...
I like the 'Boney M' beat.

Indeed the song is not that fantastic but her singing is.

Nothing outstanding but it's just 'outstanding in it's simplicity' (no big show).

I like it because it catches the attention from the start and the switching between real good singing and the singing/telling keeps your attention till the end.

Or is it me being in a good mood these days ? ;-)

I like this one - The only song at the contest in this type of music.

A bit strange to find it on Eurovision but it's a music that has a lot of success right now.

It's not as good but a little 'try' to go in the direction of one of my favourite groups 'Muse'.

# 2 NELSON

Belgium - Last selection round before semi-finals

Best selection round of all 4. All songs this week are much better than the ones of last week.

Following two have been selected by televoting to go to the semi-finals :

First place for Sandrine - I feel the same way

Great singing and very good song, but maybe not 'commercial' enough for Eurovision Contest ? My personal favorite.

canadaguy said...
Sandrine - I feel the same way
I like this one, she has a nice sultry voice.
February 18, 2008 2:22 PM

Second place for Paranoiacs - Shout it Out

Not bad in it's own way. I would not have selected it, but that way we have a mix of 'a little bit of everything' in the semi-finals.

canadaguy said...
Second place for Paranoiacs - Shout it Out
Not bad for sound but no treat for the eyes :-)
February 18, 2008 1:52 PM

Following 2 songs/performers from all 4 selection rounds received a wildcard from the jury and also have their ticket to the semi-finals :

A Butterfly Mind - Lonely Heart on Wheels

Very nice song & singing, but would either be squeezed by all 'noisy acts' either get attention for the softness ?

canadaguy said...
A Butterfly Mind - Lonely Heart on Wheels
Very sweet pleasant song I like the harmony sound but I am sure something with more PUNCH will be chosen.
February 18, 2008 1:43 PM

Tabitha Cycon - Rumour Has it

I like her voice and great singing, but song is not for Eurovision and they have to work a lot to have a better act.

canadaguy said...
Tabitha Cycon - Rumour Has it
I don't care much for this style of music, sort of cross between Rock-a-Billy and Jazz.
February 18, 2008 1:29 PM

Sunday, February 17, 2008

Mor Ve Ötesi - Deli - Turkey

Song has been chosen for Mor Ve Ötesi

Not bad, but I would like it a lot more with less guitar (a bit too noisy, draws the attention away from the singing).

canadaguy said...
Yes very loud and noisy, some of that though is the recording of this clip, some of the others are clearer and not so harsh sounding.

Belgium - 3rd selection round

A rather weak selection round yesterday, but here are the 2 songs/performances that will go to the semi finals

Nelson - When I Can't find love

This one ended at first place and was also the one I prefer. Good singing, love song, cute boy but maybe it could get a bit 'boring' at the end.

canadaguy said...
Nelson-When I Can't Find Love
Yes a sweet song, nice to listen to but not very exciting show.
February 11, 2008 10:04 AM

Geena Lisa - Wheel of Time

Singing is ok - catchy sound - good message but there is something about it that makes that I'm not realy 'into it'. Maybe because it's strange to see Geena Lisa singing/acting this way.

Belgium - 2nd selection round

Another 2 songs/performers have been selected by televoting to join the Belgian semi-finals.

Out of the 5 participants of yesterday the following 2 got most votes (and also my preferences) :

Ishtar - O Julisi Na Jalini

Imaginary language - Original and the way they perform brings a lot of positive/good mood. Could be good if all other songs are more 'noisy' ones.

canadaguy said...
Pleasant and happy sounding.Glad to know there are still
vooronde 3;4+5 ;-)
February 4, 2008 11:31 AM

Tanja Dexters - Addicted To You

No special song, but this kind of songs always is refreshing and could have success at Eurovision contest. But will other countries not send better ones ? I do not really understand the link between the lyrics and the dancers (and dancers kissing), but maybe done to get the 'gay votes'. Nice that this one goes to semi-finals, but I think it will have difficulties to reach the finals.

canadaguy said...
OK! 12 points to the dancers :-P hahahaha

Belgium - First selections for semi-finals

We will have to wait for another 7 weeks before knowing who will represent Belgium but yesterday we already had the first selection round with first 5 candidates.

Following 2 will go to the first semi-finals :

Brahim - What I like about you (finished 2nd place)

Highest quality, but probably no real 'Eurovision' song (although Germany got good points with 'similar' style last year)

Katy Satyn - Magical Sensation (finished 1st place)

Complete show - will need a bit more practice on the singing but contains all 'eurovision' elements.

After the 4 selection rounds for the semi-finals another 2 songs could get a wild card from the jury.
I hope Betty 'Femme Fatale' will get one. Even if she can't sing, maybe the only way for Belgium to get some points is to send such a 'show' :

Andorra

good voice but I think they are missing a lot of interest by not having a full version or is it that they don't want everyone to notice that it is not much of a song?

Very simple. If she sings very good and brings a very good show, this could give her some points ... but .. I'm afraid it won't. Depends on all other songs/shows.

Glad to see Albania selected again some quality & tradition. Amongst the first 7 countries known this is the one I prefer.

I know the lyrics aren't much to write home about but the music is nice, he has a great voice and puts his heart into his performance. My fav so far:-)

One of the best songs ever sent by Switzerland. Very nice voice and cute face but not enough energy in the song to ensure people keep it in mind for voting.

ERA STUPENDO

C’è una parte di me
tutti pensano a sè
era stupendo volare via, sfidare il tempo,la fantasia
la tua e la mia, nella stessa poesia.
era stupendo, era stupendo

IT WAS WONDERFUL (PAOLO MENEGUZZI)

There's a part of me
That can't keep quiet
I see there's rancour
Pain, poverty
I see myself again as a child

Who ran on blue
It was wonderful to fly away

To challenge the wind, the fantasy
Your hand and mine
In the same poem
It was wonderful
But some night you'll see

I'll run away from destiny,
I swearIf life will wait for us
We'll return down there
It will be wonderful to fly away
To challenge again the fantasy
And then your hand and mine
In the same poem
It was wonderful
It was wonderful
Because there's no peace

As long as everyone thinks of himself
It was wonderful to fly away

To challenge the wind, the fantasy
Your hand and mine
In the same poem
It was wonderful
It was wonderful
